After their most impressive victory to date,a 3-1 defeat of high flying Derry City, Sligo Rovers manager was full of praise for the man who has played a huge role in picking up 6 points in 3 days, local favourite Paul Mc Tiernan.
Connor said: "I'm absolutely delighted [with him].Paul has been unlucky, he has played almost every game and wasn't quite getting the breaks. He has worked hard and been patient. The fact he has gone full time, training every day, it has shown in his game. Paul is a very brave player, almost naive at times in chasing down certain situations but we have got him working in the right areas and chasing balls he thinks he can win. And when he cant win them keeping his shape. Again two goals tonight and two great finishes for a striker." It's been many years since the clubs have recorded such headline grabbing victories in the space of a few days. Derry and Bohemians are two of the most famous clubs in Ireland and Connor, as ever, is keen to build on the excellent start Rovers have made on their return to the Premier Division. He wants 3 or 4 signings in the upcoming transfer window and said this on the matter: "Now is the time to improve. When you are in the top 6,when we are looking a good side and have won games. Players want to come when you win games and are being successful - that is the time to push the boat out and bring in the extra quality you need" It seems the attendance at the Showgrounds attract more column inches than the team's performance these days. Again the number of home fans attending on Monday was disappointing, it could possibly restrict the number of new signings in the transfer market and it is something that is clearly frustrating the Belfast native. "When I came here I promised that I would bring success. I was told that[if I did] the crowds would come back in droves and that has not happened. For long periods tonight the Derry City fans outsung the Sligo Rovers fans and it is worrying you have to go 3-1 up to get the fans excited. I don't know, I cant do anymore. We keep trying to play attacking football, thats 6 goals in the last 2 home games and 12 goals in the last 4 game so that can't be bad.” That may have been the only disappointing aspect of Monday's victory. Another moment for the Bit O' Red faithful to savour was Keith Foy's expertly executed free kick which gave Rovers a 2-1 lead at the time. Foy cemented his status as a hero for the fans after he silenced the Derry supporters who targeted him in the 2nd half. It was another excellent performance by the former Nottingham Forest player, who has been one of Rovers' most consistent players this season. Sean said "Keith is a quality player and is used to that that sort of thing. It's like water of a ducks back, he is a good pro. When they are giving him abuse, he is doing something right.” Man of the Match and two goal hero Paul Mc Tiernan declared himself delighted with his form after he helped secure another 3 points for the Bit O' Red on Monday. Mc Tiernan said "When I came back after the break I came back with the mentality of scoring goals. I had scored against Waterford United and the following game versus Bray was called of so it kind of broke the run of things. But I scored two against Bohs and scored two tonight so I am delighted with myself really" Mc Tiernan took the opportunity to praise his Rovers teammates who are at the moment providing him with the service to become the form striker in the league at the moment. "The majority of balls are looking for feet and its much better for the players. The service is brilliant, there is more balls going in the box and there is more goals being scored" Next up for Mc Tiernan and his team mates is a trip to Inchicore to play the side only one point above them in the league, St. Patricks Athletic. "It's a big game next week, this is the one.Hopefully last week was the start of the big run," the Ballyfarnon man concluded. St Pats v Sligo Rovers, Friday 30th July,7.45 kick off in Richmond Park. |
