Sligo Rovers took on cross channel opposition in the Showgrounds last night as they faced English League Two side Peterborough United. Peterborough included in their squad former Birmingham and Wimbledon player Dean Holden, former Leicester star Trevor Benjamin and Northern Ireland international Jimmy Quinn. Rovers manager Sean Connor used the game to give a run out to a number of U-21 players and a couple of trialists.

Peterborough made the better start and their early pressure paid off as they took the lead in the 31st minute when the impressive Danny Crowe broke into the box and knocked the ball across to Danny Yeo who shot in on the turn. A minute later and Peterborough made it two as Rovers were caught on the counter with Benjamin playing Yeo and he rounded Rovers keeper Richard Brush before shooting into the un-guarded net. Rovers should have pulled a goal back in the 34th minute when Sean Kelly played a good ball into Fahrudin Kudozovic who got behind the Peterborough defence but swiped at the ball and it went wide.

Both sides made a number of changes in the second half and that certainly disrupted the overall flow of the game. Rovers though created a good chance to pull a goal back in the 70th minute as Kelly floated in a free from the left which Jamie McKenzie went for and the ball dropped for John Bellew but his low drive was saved by the legs of Peterborough keeper Luke McShane. Peterborough added a third in the 86th minute when they won a free kick 25 yards from goal. Justin Richards took it quick side-footing it low past the wall and inside the post catching Brush off guard. They added some gloss to the scoreline as they scored a fourth in the 89th minute when Richards made a break down the left and knocked the ball low across the face of goal enabling Lloyd Opara to score with a simple tap-in.
