Sligo Rovers returned to winning ways last night (Fri 18 Aug) with a solid win over a depleted Bray Wanderers thanks to goals from Darren Mansaram and Harpal Singh in what was a dress rehearsal for Saturday night’s FAI Cup tie against the same opposition in The Showgrounds.
Sligo Rovers 2 – 0 Bray Wanderers Date: Fri 18 Aug, 2006 7.45 pm Venue: The Showgrounds City Alarms Man of the Match: Conor O’Grady With the bulk of the work done in the first half, thanks to goals by Mansaram (his sixth this season) and Singh (his first for Rovers) the game wound down to a whimper in the second with the only dark moment, a flash of madness from Gavin Peers who was sent off for stamping. With Paul McTiernan returning from an ankle injury on the bench and Chris Turner starting in midfield after his mid-week exertions in Romania with Northern -Ireland under 21s, Connor had an almost full strength squad to choose from (the exception being long term injury, Sean Flannery.) On the other hand, the visitors were five players short through injury and suspension and on the back of four consecutive league defeats, Rovers took full advantage from the off, putting Bray onto the backfoot as early as the opening minute, when Liam Burns drilled a Turner corner narrowly wide. It didn’t take long for the home side to make the breakthrough, when in the sixth minute, Darren Mansaram headed home a Cash cross past Rogers. Playing in an advanced role, Cash was involved again just after the half hour when he sent Singh on his way. The former Leeds man, taking advantage of his first home start bore down on goals and fired a shot in that deflected wickedly off McKeever and into the net. Bray’s best chance fell to Andrew Cousins whose shot from a Fox through ball flew inches wide. It was at the other end though they were most impressive, in particular ‘ keeper, Rogers, who denied Cash a goal. First blood to Rovers as attention is drawn towards next Saturday’s FAI Cup match in The Showgrounds.
