The Showgrounds was buzzing last night as a late goal from Adam Hughes gave Sligo Rovers a 1-0 victory against Bohemians and that result means that they leap-frog Cork City to move into fourth place in the Eircom League Premier Division.
Report courtesy, www.oceanfm.ieThe visitors though enjoyed the better of the first half with Rovers best opportunity coming in the 18th minute when Brian Cash played the ball across from the left to Darren Mansaram and he set up Hughes who was narrowly over with a left foot lob. Bohs nearly took the lead on the half hour mark as Fergal Harkin took a corner on the right which came back out to him and he played it into Thomas Heary who held the ball up for Aidan O’Keeffe and his low drive was cleared off the line by Liam Burns. O’Keeffe went close again in the 39th minute as he was put through by John Paul Kelly and with everyone expecting a cross he went for goal but was denied by a great save from John O’Hara who scooped the ball away from underneath the crossbar.Rovers twice went close in the 56th minute to opening the scoring as first Fahrudin Kudozovic put in a cross from the right which was met by a header from Cash that was saved by Bohs keeper Stephen O’Brien and then seconds later Mansaram was put through on goal and his venomous drive was touched onto the post by O’Brien. Bohs were denied by the woodwork themselves in the 76th minute as the ball was played up to substitute Stephen Ward who held off Michael McNamara and seeing that O'Hara was off is line went for goal only for the ball to rebound back off the crossbar. Rovers had another good chance in the 82nd minute as Liam Burns played a defence splitting pass in from the right and Paul McTiernan was first to the ball but he was denied by a good reaction stop from O’Brien. Three minutes later and Rovers scored the games only goal as McTiernan went on a solo run and was brought down just outside the box. Harpal Singh took the resulting free kick curling it around the wall and the ball was again touched onto the woodwork by O’Brien but this time it dropped kindly to Hughes who headed home from close range to leave the final score in the Showgrounds Sligo Rovers 1, Bohemians 0.This result puts Rovers back in fourth place ahead of Cork City who come to the Showgrounds on Tuesday night (12 Sep).
