Sligo Rovers survived the fright of their lives at Tolka Park and it took an extra-time strike from Paul McTiernan to send them through to the semi-finals of the FAI Carlsberg Cup.

McTiernan’s goal after goalkeeper Lee Murphy was unable to gather Faz Kudozovic’s shot on the greasy surface was the difference between the sides after ninety minutes had produced six goals.

In a barnstorming opening to the game the sides exchanged efforts in the first twenty minutes.

John Bellew put the visitors ahead with a headed goal, his first for the club, and then Michael Keogh sent the home crowd into delirium when after good work from Shane Dunne on the right and David Sheridan, Keogh connected with his low cross.

Killester looked the hungrier and at times the more skilful side in the opening forty-five, but there was a sucker punch waiting for them a minute before the break.

Sligo's only threat looked likely to come from set-pieces and Adam Hughes rose highest to another Singh corner and put the Premier Division side in the driving seat.

But the minnows would not lie down and they were level again six minutes after the break when David Lacey put in a rebound from Sheridan’s header.

Keogh had his second goal of the night to level the game again after Gavin Peers had edged the “Bit O’ Red” into the lead on 67 minutes.

Sligo were shell-shocked by the power, vigour and skill of the Killester challenge and it was a source of great relief to them when Paul McTiernan snatched his goal twelve minutes into extra time to send them through to the semi-finals to join St. Patrick’s Athletic, Shamrock Rovers and Derry City.

It was a close run thing and full credit to Killester who played with great determination throughout and probably failed only because they could not match Sligo’s fitness in an exhausting and entertaining contest.
