DRAINED. Exhausted. Need time to recover. What an exciting FAI Cup quarter-final replay at Tolka Park. I was drained, exhausted and needed time to recover – and I was only watching. A rollercoaster of a game 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 3-3, 4-3, full-time. Singh when we’re winning, ![]() Singh up for the Bit O’Red, Singhing in the rain. Any Singh-style chant will do. We won’t get any credit for the victory – that is outside the loyal supporters who watch through red and white tinted glasses. It was a superb performance against so many obstacles with players out, players stretchered-off and players who limped off. A real test of character – and guess what – we possess plenty of it. We’re still on the road to somewhere. I was looking forward to the game - only a short drive from Navan. Reading the programme – that was the first disappointment – no balance of any description – it was all about Killester. Fair enough, I suppose, in one sense as it was a fine achievement to get a replay from their visit to The Showgrounds. “Hopefully we will have a shorter trip in the semi-final,” commented Killester chairman Bill Brennan. No acknowledgement of the generous reception Killester received after the full-time whistle at The Showgrounds. Well, Bill, you got your wish – your trip for the semi-final is shorter! Best chant of the night – “I broke my drumstick, I broke my drumstick” midway through the first-half. The question must be posed – Were the Sligo Rovers players just toying with Killester? For dramatic effect and all that sort of thing. Sort of like a shrewd trainer trying to place his horse in moderate company without looking too good with the intention of striking for a big prize at a good price. We fit into that category. Struggled to beat Bray, struggled to beat Killester. Next time out – struggled to beat Derry City. And for the decider – struggled to beat SSSSSS (can’t remember who is in the other semi). And when it’s it’s all over – Ah, it wasn’t a great final, Sligo struggled to win. That’ll do rightly. Kind of like the question – Which would you prefer: to be nearly drowned or nearly saved???
