 In team news for Rovers Liam Burns and Darren Mansaram were back from injury with Gavin Peers partnering Burns in the Rovers defence while Mansaram was upfront alongside Paul McTiernan. Waterford included in their starting eleven former Sligo Rovers player Robbie Hedderman and Sligo native Alan Cawley.

Rovers had started well going close after 8 minutes when Fahrudin Kudozovic played the ball up to Darren Mansaram who turned and shot for goal with his thirty yard effort flashing wide of the upright. Waterford had their first chance in the 19th minute when Conor O’Grady was caught in possession by Cawley whose shot was saved by John O’Hara.

Harpal Singh went close for Rovers in the 42nd minute as his free kick from just outside the box was narrowly over. Rovers best chance of the half came in stoppage time when Adam Hughes put McTiernan in on goal and he looked to have got past Waterford defender Alan Keely but Keely recovered to block McTiernan’s shot and the ball came through to Mansaram who was denied from close range by Waterford keeper Ben Spicer.

The second half was shaded by Waterford who were proving hard to break down, they had their first chance of the half in the 51st minute when James Chambers went to lob O’Hara who was off his line but he recovered to push the ball over the crossbar. Ten minutes later and the visitors threatened again as Cawley turned and put in a good cross from the right which was volleyed over by Ger McCarthy. Rovers made their only change in the 64th minute as John Bellew replaced McTiernan.

Cawley created another opportunity for Waterford in the 67th minute as controlled a free from Kenny Browne and crossed into the box where Robert Brosnan headed into the arms of O’Hara. Rovers did rally towards the end of the game and could have snatched a winner in the 85th minute when Mansaram played a low ball across to Bellew who couldn’t get a shot off and he Active Imagelaid the ball for Keith Foy who chipped it over and it finished in the Showgrounds Sligo Rovers 0, Waterford United 0.
