The omens were bad from the start for Rovers as they were forced to wear Derry’s third choice kit instead of their own away jerseys.

Rovers took to the field with a 4-5-1 formation but were never allowed settle into the game as Derry attacked from the start with both Darren Kelly and Barry Molloy going close early one. Against the run of play Rovers could have taken the lead in the 8th minute when Harpal Singh put in a cross from the left which Derry keeper David Forde came out to clear but his poor kick came straight to Adam Hughes who went for goal but the ball was headed off the line by Sean Hargan. In the 17th minute Derry started the move that led to their first goal as Stephen O’Flynn put in a cross from the left which dropped kindly for Gary Beckett and his shot took a deflection off a Rovers defender that took the ball just past the post. Hargan swung in the resulting corner from the left finding Kelly who rose above the Rovers defence to head home.

Derry doubled their lead in the 24th minute as Hargan went for goal from 30 yards and his shot took a wicked deflection off Michael McNamara and while John O’Hara got his hand to the ball it wasn’t enough to stop it going in.

Five minutes later and they made it three when Gavin Peers slipped while in possession just outside the box and O’Flynn reacted quickest to latch onto the loose ball and smash it past O’Hara.

The second half wasn’t as incident packed as the first and Rovers nearly pulled a goal back in the 66th minute when Peers put in a cross from the left which was headed down by Chris Turner to Adam Hughes and his low drive went across the front of goal and hit the foot of the post.

A minute later and Derry wrapped up the scoring as the ball was played into the feet of O’Flynn who held it up and played it back to Mark Farren and he scored with a well placed left foot shot from outside the box.
