One point from two games and two home games without any goals. Loads of ammunition for the prophets of doom.
The siege of Derry on Tuesday night (17th October) took on a whole new meaning. It was over in 90 minutes, at least we can be thankful for that. And our failure to score against Waterford shows up some major deficiencies. We must take our chances. At least we didn’t squander any chances in Derry. We didn’t get any. It demonstrated the next level to which we must aspire if we are going to be a top team. At this stage a top four finish looks unlikely, but then football is a funny game. If we win in Cork and Drogheda lose in Derry, it opens up the race again for fourth place. If If If. Too many Ifs. A little too much indiscipline at rain-lashed Brandywell. Yellow card for kicking the ball away – that could be a costly decision. Can’t complain about the referee applying the rules. Can complain about the free he awarded to Derry which led to their fourth goal. Can’t comment about the three we conceded in the first-half – too far away at the other end of the ground, but they looked terrible. Then we played in black. Can complain about that. I always thought that the home team had to change where there was clash of colours?? Maybe someone could clarify that. Generous of Derry to provide the change?? Bet on black and you lose – against Finn Harps – we lost, against Shelbourne – we lost, against Derry – we lost. Now we have an acceptable reason for the defeat, so we need not feel too bad about it anymore. The Cup semi-final will be a big challenge to our supporters, never mind our team. We better not let ‘them’ out-support us. Very impressive home support in the Brandywell. The only consolation after this defeat is that we were far enough off the pace to actually be in with a chance in a one-off game like the FAI Cup semi-final. And the Bookies will be offering long odds on the Bit O’Red. Pile in with the Euros and get some early Xmas expenses. After all, we confidently chanted on Tuesday night – “We’re going to win the Cup, we’re going to win the Cup” and even better was “1-0 at Lansdowne Road, 1-0 at Lansdowne Road.” Bring on Shams for the final – “We’re going to win the Cup” aren’t we??? by Conall Collier |
