Connor, who had announced his resignation as the Showgrounds supremo just before kick-off time, will want to forget about UCD as this was the Students third victory over Sligo this season.

The Connacht side did make a bright start when Bosnian-born Fahrudin Kudozovic picked up a loose ball in midfield on eight minutes and fired in a shot from the edge of the box which hit the crossbar and over to safety.

Derek Doyle did have the ball in the net for College on 12 minutes when he fired past goalkeeper Richard brush from the left after Conor Sammon had knocked down a cross from Conor Kenna. But assistant referee Rhona Daly had already flagged for offside.

The Students might have broken the deadlock on 33 minutes only for Kavanagh to blaze over the top after the always dangerous Doyle had created the opening.

Then a free kick by midfielder Stephen Hurley early in second half was comfortably gathered by Brush. And it was Hurley again with a long range effort narrowly wide of the target on a night when defences were totally on top.

Kavanagh then shot just wide from 20 yards before Doyle had an angled shot pushed round the post by Brush at the near post. But those were rare moments of anxiety for a no-nonsense Sligo defence with the match looking set to end as a drab scoreless draw.

But Kavanagh was to have the final say in the last minute when chasing down a misdirected back pass and shooting into the corner of the net past the despairing dive of Brush.
