With Sligo Rovers needing 4 points from their final two fixtures to secure fifth spot in their first season back in the Premier Division, Gareth Gorman will be looking for a result on Saturday night against Drogheda United.
Caretaker manager Gorman praised the work rate of his young side following the disappointing 2-0 loss to Shelbourne last Tuesday night (Nov 7). The dramatic events of the previous few days had supporters in downbeat mood but the efforts of the injury hit squad gave them reason to be proud. The Donegal man gave this reaction to the game

“It was a hard night at the office. When you lose two key players to injury so early on it makes it difficult because it upsets your game-plan. But to be honest, everyone out there worked hard and ran their socks off so we could not fault the commitment or the effort. The first goal was a good strike but it has taken a deflection and the second goal was actually an own goal. You get nights like that. When you play a team like Shelbourne you  have to run your socks off and get a wee bit of luck but tonight we just didn’t get it”

The caretaker manager was not happy with the play that resulted in the first goal. It was something he felt that could have been avoided

“We started off well and I couldn’t complain at that. But the goal they scored we gave away a stupid short throw in and they ended up getting 3 corners in a row and that is where the goal came from.”

Of course if someone told Gareth Gorman last week he would be managing the team against Shelbourne and would be complaining to the assembled media about the mistakes his side had made he would laughed at the suggestion. He admitted that it has been a hectic time and the future is unclear.

“It is not something I planned. Sean has left and he has left a lot of good players. There is a core of a potentially great team here and it would not take much to take them a bit further next year but in saying that you have to get the right man as well.”

A question was then put to Gorman regarding the possible role of full time manager at the Showgrounds, ”if the position was offered to you would you be interested?”. He gave a frank and sharp response to it.

“I personally do not want the job. I work Monday to Friday 9-5 and I am happy with that. I would not mind doing a bit of coaching here but that is it.”

Looking ahead to the final home game of the season, Rovers could potentially seal 5th place in the league with a win over high flying Drogheda. Gorman had this to say on the battle for the position.

“Pats have to play Derry on Friday. I think we really need something on Saturday night, it is our last home game of the season. We have got Bray the following week and it would be nice to have 5th place secured before we go so we can give a couple of younger lads a run because they deserve it.

There are young lads there like Emlyn Mulligan,Sean Kelly, even Oisin Mannion is coming into the squad lately and John Bellew showed tonight winning deservedly winning Man of the Match that if you work hard with a bit of luck you get your reward.”

Kick-off for the clash with Drogheda on Saturday night in the Showgrounds is 7.45pm.
