Rovers without four local players next season PDF Print E-mail

The news last week that Michael McNamara, Conor O’Grady and Sean Flannery will not be appearing in the red and white of Sligo Rovers in 2007 came as something of a shock to Rovers fans as new manager, Rob McDonald, sets his sights on a full-time set-up at The Showgrounds.
Work commitments for the popular trio has meant that the morning and afternoon training regime that McDonald is introducing proved untenable and so the former Newcastle player, must now plan for next season without them.

Speaking to sligorovers.com the manager said, “I’m very disappointed that these lads can’t commit to us full time but I want to move the club forward and full time training is part and parcel of that.

“I’ve spoken to majority of players – some will take us forward, some won’t. It’s my ambition to get us closer to the top four and I believe that I need a full-time training set up to achieve that. There was a big gap between the fifth and fourth at the end of the season and I want to close it.

“As well as training twice a day with the first team squad, my ambition is to create an under 21 team specifically for local talent. I will train them myself in the evening so that in three to four years time, there should be enough home-grown talent that we’ve brought on ourselves to help us achieve my objectives.”

In addition to the departure of McNamara, O’Grady and Flannery, Ballyfarnon man, Paul McTiernan, has indicated to the manager that he did not wish to renew his contract.

Sligorovers.com would like to take this opportunity to wish Michael, Conor, Sean and Paul the very best in their future footballing career.
