Sligo Rovers Chairmen, Michael Toolan revealed that up to eight new players would be unveiled in the coming weeks, as the club announced that Athlone Town would provide the opposition for a friendly at the Showgrounds on February 19th.
Courtesy of The Sligo Weekender A host of former Sligo Rovers favourites are set to return to The Showgrounds in February to take on the club’s current stars. Paul McTiernan, Ian Rossiter, Steve Feeney, Danny O’Leary and Jim Sheridan are among the players that should be part of the Athlone Town team that is scheduled to visit Sligo for a pre-season friendly on February 19. In the meantime, new Rovers boss Rob McDonald will finalise his squad for the new season, with up to eight new signings set to be unveiled over the coming weeks as the team return for pre-season training. One man who won’t be at Rovers next year, however, is commercial manager Richard Sutherland. Rovers chairman Michael Toolan has confirmed that Sutherland has left the club. He may link up with former Rovers boss Sean Connor at Bohemians, but as the Dublin club has recently appointed a new commercial manager, Sutherland’s role would probably be in a coaching capacity should he join the Phibsboro outfit. Former Rovers players Darren Mansaram and Liam Burns have reportedly already linked up with Connor in Bohs, while Sligo native Mark Rossiter may also be plying his trade at Dalymount Park in the coming season. Sutherland had been running the Rovers’ underage coaching camps in Sligo and training the IT Sligo soccer team, and Toolan confirmed that Rovers will be seeking to fill the post and a new post of club promotions officer in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Toolan has thanked all the club’s co-op members, 400 Club members and season ticket holders that attended a meeting on the future of the club last Tuesday in the Radisson SAS Hotel, Ballincar. He described the meeting, attended by well over 100 fans, as ‘very positive’ and said: “It was great to get a the views of a cross section of fans and there was a number of suggestions put forward for raising the club’s income. “Around 20 people put their names down to get involved in helping with the running of the club on a volunteer basis and the more help the management committee can get, the easier it will be to move the club forward. “I want to thank all our supporters, our long-term sponsors, Tohers the Chemist and the McSweeney Group, and all our associate sponsors for their continued support,” the chairman added. |
