Rovers go top with ideal start PDF Print E-mail

In what was a dream start to the new campaign following the week that was, goals from Gary Curran and Jason McCartney gave Rovers victory over Galway United in a pulsating encounter in Terryland Park. The win puts Rovers on top of the league, albeit after only one game.

Leo Tierney and Dessie Cawley were in charge of the team for the game. They were dealt a huge blow in the run up to the game with the news that 3 players were ineligible to take part. Tomislav Arcaba, Piotr Badjiak and Zoltan Vasas all had to sit in the stands. Arcaba's place was taken by Richard Brush who despite suffering from a knee ligament injury produced a magnificent display and set an example for the 10 players ahead of him with a faultless display

Rovers started well and rattled the Tribesmen from the first whistle. The electric atmosphere played a big role in the match and it looked as if Rovers responded better to it. They were not allowing Galway any time on the ball. The first chance of the game fell to returning left back Keith Foy. A foul on Conor O' Grady gave Foy the chance to trouble the United keeper Dmitri Brinias but his shot fizzed past the post. Rovers were dictating the place yet it was Galway who went close next as Richard Brush produced a superb save to thwart Barry Moran and Chris Armstrong couldnt convert the follow up.

Raf Cretaro, Conor O Grady and Gary Curran were running the show for Rovers in midfield and in the closing stages of the first half Rovers continued to dominate, roared on by an enthusiastic travelling support. It was Curran who had the next chance but his ambitious shot from distance failed to trouble the Galway goalkeeper. Then Cretaro and Foy again tried their luck from set pieces at the edge of the Galway box but they could not find the breakthrough their pressure deserved.

As the players made their way out for the second half it was feared Rovers would regret not capitalizing on their dominance in the second half but these worries proved unfounded as in the 52min Rovers got their first goal of the 2007 season. Fahrudin Kudozivic and Raf Cretaro linked up well to slide a ball through to Adam Hughes. The angle was tight so he cleverly laid the ball onto Gary Curran and he had the simple task of rolling the ball into the empty net. It was no more than Rovers deserved as Galway had no answer to the crisp passing by the Bit O' Red.

Galway had their best spell of the game just after Rovers got their goal. The team went very deep and United began to create half chances of their own. However the commitment and determination not to concede by the Rovers defence kept Galway at bay and Rovers survived. They regained their slick attacking play and made it 2-0 in the 69th minute. Again it was Cretaro at the heart of the attack as he out fought Philip Reilly and crossed the ball for Jason Mc Cartney to slot home and give Rovers a comfortable lead. As the minutes ticked away the back four stayed strong and despite being slightly lucky at times they held out for the clean sheet their display deserved. That display was summed up in the final minute as countless Rovers players through themselves at the ball to deny Armstrong and Derek O Brien who saw his attempts hit the bar and blocked on the line. The win ended a dramatic week for the club and the celebration by fans, coaches and the players showed just what it meant to all of them
