After the 2-0 defeat to Derry City caretaker manager Leo Tierney gave his thoughts on his first defeat while taking charge of the Bit O' Red.
Two goals at the end of the first half did the damage and ,Tierney similarly to Conor O' Grady, pointed to the gulf in quality within the sides as the main difference "The resources we have at the moment compared to what Derry have I think showed at the end of the day. They had a bit of luck getting two deflected goals,we needed to get on of those in the second half when we had pressure of and we didn't get one.But overall while the result may have been disappointing I think the performance was very, very good and we did our best on the day" The 2-0 victory in Galway lifted expectations around the Showgrounds for the first home game so to see a potential result on the cards drift away from Rovers in a matter of minutes was disappointing, however the character Rovers showed in the 2nd half was a boost for the side and they received a great ovartion at the end. "Maybe we just lost our concentration for a few minutes and they took control. With the quality they have they just took control and kept the ball in the middle of the park. But once we regrouped and we got a few things sorted we gave a good account of ourselves.Second half I thought we really had a go and that is what we were saying [at half time] that we were not going to be afraid, we were going to go and give it a go. We went and tried to play and pass the ball." Midfielder Steve Manson made his debut for Rovers in the game and made an impression for the Bit O' Red on the right side of a 5 man midfield. Tierney gave his thoughts on the new player and what is to come from him "Stephen is a good player, he had come in and worked really hard. We got as much as we could out of him,we were looking for 65-70 mins.In fairness to the him he gave it everything and I think he will fit in very well here.". This Friday night Rovers will try and pick themselves up with what promises to be a close battle with Longford Town in Flancare Park . The early team news is not good for the side as Chris Turner will be unavailable due to his particpation with Northern Ireland U21's while Tierney says Gary Curran may have suffered a serious injury after Darren Kelly's tackle. This will be known later in the week,he can only be considered seriously doubtful for the Longford match. The Mayo gave his thoughts on what will be Rovers' third game of the season "Looking at the first two games we would have been delighted if we got 4 points, we got 3 so its not a bad start. Longford will be hard up there but we will prepare properly and go up there and give it a go again. Adam Hughes is back so we will have to rejig but that is the challenge in front of us" Click here to read Conor O'Gradys thoughts on the match Courtesy : Rory Houston |
