Work has started on a new floodlighting system in Sligo Showgrounds. Having received enquiries from a number of contractors, Sligo Rovers engaged the services of John Keane Ltd, Cork, to carry out this work. Preparatory work has been underway at the ground for a number of weeks, and the pylons were delivered over the Easter weekend.
BACKGROUND The poor standard of lighting was a concern for the players, supporters and management committee. The ongoing problem with the lights was exacerbated by the difficulty in sourcing replacement bulbs. Among the conditions of Sligo Rovers ‘A’ Licence, which permitted our participation in the Premier Division, was a stipulation that for evening games the floodlights be upgraded to a level consistent with broadcast standard. As a number of clubs were facing the same prospect, it had been the FAI’s intention to co-ordinate the ordering and installation of lights around the various grounds, as the clubs would benefit from the economies of scale of a composite contract. However, when a number of the clubs decided to make their own arrangements, this option was no longer open to the FAI. In the circumstances Sligo Rovers had to follow suit and to seek the services of competent contractors to carry out this specialised task. VAST IMPROVEMENT While there was a period of time lost in resolving the procurement issue in the close season, the club is confident that the new floodlights will be a vast improvement on the existing facilities, and will be welcomed by players and supporters. Explained a spokesperson for the club ‘This is a major undertaking by the club, and we are pleased we have engaged a firm with a proven track record in this area. We intend to deliver the project in two phases. The first phase will see the erection of two new floodlight pylons on the new stand side, but it is our ultimate intention to replace the two pylons fronting the Jinks Avenue side with two new corner pylons. However, our focus at this stage is on the two pylons being erected over the coming weeks, and supporters can expect a vast improvement in the quality of the lighting.’ While the initial work has been completed, the civil and electrical works will be carried out over the next few weeks, and the club is confident the new lights will be in place and operational in May. PROGRAMME OF WORKS While the floodlights are the most urgent works being carried out, the club is in the midst of a major ground development programme. The lengthening of the pitch is almost completed, a new PA system is being installed, new facilities are being provided for away supporters, and a recessed entrance incorporating new turnstiles is nearing completion. The club has also prepared ambitious plans for a new Coaching & Development Centre and Gymnasium. The new facility will also include a futsal area, a project which is being developed with the active support and guidance of the FAI’s Technical Division. Following on the delivery of the all weather pitch and new boundary wall, the club is well on the way to realising its ambition to make the Showgrounds the most attractive and best equipped ground in the country. THE FUTURE According to Sligo Rovers Chairman Michael Toolan ‘Our objective for the season ahead is to progress the club on both fronts; On the field, to sustain our impressive early season form with a view to achieving a high league position. Off the field, to maintain the rate of our development programme for the benefit of players and supporters. There are challenging times ahead, but it is a challenge everyone at the club relishes.’ |
