Report courtesy of www.fai.ie Drogheda United moved to joint top of the eircom League of Ireland Premier Division after a comprehensive win over Sligo Rovers at United Park. The home side struck three times in the opening half hour to seal victory in a game they controlled from start to finish. Two goals for striker Eamon Zayed, the first a cracker, and another from fellow front man Declan O'Brien saw the Boynesiders ease to a comfortable three points. With the game only eight minutes old Shane Robinson began the move that led to the first Drogheda goal when he picked out Declan O'Brien with his back to the target just outside the Sligo box. He chested it into the path of Eamon Zayed who rifled his shot with the outside of his boot from 25 yards to the top corner of the net. The home side went two up with 24 minutes gone when O'Brien chased a Brian Shelley ball to the end line which Zultan Vasas tried to see out for a goal kick. However, the United striker somehow nicked the ball from the Rovers defender, managed to keep it in play and pulled it across for Zayed who finished with ease from six yards. Drogheda, now on the rampage, struck for a third just three minutes later when Simon Webb's long ball from defence on the left found Declan O'Brien on the corner of the box. The United captain, who had a storming half, controlled the ball brilliantly before planting his strike past keeper Richard Brush to the bottom left corner of the net. Drogheda United: Vilmunen, Lynch, Webb, Gartland (Gray 43), Robinson (O'Keeffe 62), O'Brien, Shelley, Bradley, Byrne, Zayed, Cahill (Keegan 68). Sligo Rovers: Brush, Coleman, Foy (McCartney H/T), O'Grady, McKenzie, Vasas (Kelly 34), Cretaro, Hughes, Turner, Bajdziak (Aisien 77), Kudozovic. Referee: Declan Hanney (Dublin). |
