What positives can you take from a three-goal defeat? Drogheda are joint top of the table, they were at home, we have no manager, we have no recognised striker, we had players out injured, they only sing when they’re winning.
Three terrible goals were conceded, but we never threw in the towel, we kept battling away for 90 minutes. If we had any luck at all we would have had a goal within a minute of the restart, but the deflection rocketed the wrong side of the post. Had we got that goal we might have got back into the game – but at least we played some good football, we made Drogheda work hard to maintain a three-goal cushion. I watched the game with a player's father. He felt we were standing off the Drogheda players too much. He had a point. It was funny really, when the ‘red and white’ army started shouting derogatory comments about Dubliners – directed towards the assistant-referee – the man never even batted an eyelid and him from Dublin also. It was as if he understood. One thing is certain, the Drogheda stewards are much nicer that than the Bohemians stewards – and smarter too. The way they got the cans (unopened) off the young ‘red and white’ without resorting to any unnecessary ‘Dalymount’ tactics. At this stage I will make a prediction – we will win about 16 games this season in the League. There will be, as always, plenty of ammunition for the moaners. Was I glad that I only had to drive back to Navan? A game like that and a result like that makes the journey home a lot longer. I suppose I can remember back to 1977 and the day we won the League for the first time in 40 years. I remember, that season, thinking how old those supporters were who could remember back to 1937. I remember 1977 very well. The white timber fence around the pitch. The crowd in the ground and the ground packed nearly two hours before kick-off. And Shamrock Rovers trying to do a favour for Bohemians on that Easter Sunday. Our next away game is against the same Shamrock Rovers. Let us take a big contingent of supporters to Tolka Park for that game and roar the team back to winning away. St Pat’s are up next – remember we were two down against them the last time and we won 3-2. by Conall Collier |
