Sligo Rovers F.C. are pleased to announce the signing of Paul Cook as manager with immediate effect. In unveiling Cook today at a press conference in the Radisson SAS Hotel, the club expressed their sincere thanks to Leo Tierney and Dessie Cawley for taking the reigns whilst the search for the new manager was ongoing.
Paul Cook was born in Liverpool in 1967 and who during his lengthy league career, played for; Burnley, Wolves, Wigan Athletic and Tranmere Rovers before finishing off in the 2005/06 season helping Accrington Stanley to promotion to the Football League. A left-sided or central midfielder, Paul began his career at his local non-league team Marine before being snapped up by Wigan Athletic, where he featured in almost one hundred games in a four-year spell. He then had a brief but ultimately unsuccessful spell at Norwich City before moving to the midlands to play for Wolves. Proving popular with both fans and team mates, Cook became known for his deadly and accurate left foot. After over 190 appearances for Wolves he made the short journey to Coventry City, where he stayed for two seasons before Tranmere Rovers paid £250,000 to take him to Prenton Park. ![]() In 1997, following sixty games in just eighteen months, Tranmere accepted a bid of £250,000 from Stockport County where he stayed for twelve months before moving on to Burnley, initially on loan, before signing in July 1999. He went on to make 130 league appearances for Burnley over a four year spell. He then signed for non-league team Accrington Stanley and went on to become a first team regular in their push for promotion to the Football League. This target was finally achieved in the 2005/06 season when Stanley were crowned Champions at which point Paul finally retired, after almost 600 league appearances for nine different teams. Paul had a coaching role whilst at Accrington Stanley, however, he left to manage Conference side Southport in June 2006. His tenure there was to last until January 2007 and his appointment to the hot seat at The Showgrounds will be his first venture into eircom League soccer. Cook, who is contracted until the end of the 2009 season, will get an immediate taste of the eircom League of Ireland tomorrow evening, when Rovers take on Waterford United at 6pm in The Showgrounds. |
