Five hundred  miles on the clock to watch two games in the space of six days. Regular sligorovers.com columnist, Conall Collier contrasts the long week on the road away to Ballybofey and at home against Cork.

The Bank Holiday Monday journey home from Ballybofey to Navan was longer than the journey from Sligo on Saturday night, although according to AA’s guide the distance is similar to both, about 120 miles each way. Why was that??

Pleasant surprises are always great and Saturday night’s victory over Cork City has to rank as one of the best I have experienced in many long years as a supporter.
Completely unexpected. Four in one game, five in the previous 10, what went right?

We scored the type of goals we usually concede. It was the type of performance which the regular supporter will really appreciate. It was a type of reward for all the low points over the years. And there was nothing lucky about. We really won 4-1.
And to make it all the more memorable, I witnessed what must surely be a contender for the goal-of-the-season. Matthew Judge’s piece of pure genius. Not a fluke either.

It must be the new floodlights. A good omen – unbeaten under the new lights, just like we were unbeaten under the old ‘new’lights so many years ago. It transformed our season then, could it do the same again?

Wasn’t it great to silence the ‘Rebel Army’ and I can find no source of solace for them. We’ve been beaten too many times by Cork City to feel any remorse for turning the wheel full circle. We’ve now beaten two teams this season we hadn’t beaten in a long time – UCD and Cork City.

Surly Bray won’t pose any problems next Friday night???? They shouldn’t. But then – we are Sligo Rovers and that should be sufficient to keep our feet on the ground.

Well done to the supporters in the ‘BLUE’ stand for offering some resistance to that “Rebel Army” but it was quite amazing how laid back and docile the supporters were in the main stand.
Good to see the club’s Promotions Officer conducting a survey on behalf of the FAI. I was interested in the first question – pre-match atmosphere. I couldn’t comment because there wasn’t any.

Thanks to the players for providing an atmosphere. The determination was great. The closing down was great. The discipline was great. Cork couldn’t hack it. They were arrogant and expected an easy ride. It backfired.

All is forgiven for the Finn Harps experience.
