Conall Collier gives an unusual take on the reversal at the hands of Bray on Friday night.

What's love got to do with it?

Bring on Tina Turner. Our lads could do with a LIFT. In this case ‘our lads’ are the supporters.

The male of the species is not known for spontaneous outbursts of emotion!

Yet, when the final whistle sounded at the windswept Carlisle Grounds on Friday night the players were greeted with chorus after chorus of –

“We love the Rovers, we do, oh Rovers we love you.”

Impressive stuff after we huffed and puffed to a 0-2 defeat, but the question must be posed – What’s Love Got To Do With It –
Define please: try these for starters
1. LOVE: We certainly got it on Friday night – a score of Zero.
2. LOVE ME LOVE MY DOG: accept your faults and weaknesses.
3. NO LOVE LOST: the welcome we might have for a former manager or player.
4. LOVE IS IN THE AIR: (okay so that was a hit song in the ‘70s – as was no. 2)

LOVE really plays a big part in being a supporter, examples listed above and number 1 and 2 were definitely vying for top sport in the Garden County (that’s Wicklow) at about 9.30pm on Friday night.

Can you think of an appropriate song that you might apply to yourself as a supporter of a team which never fails to surprise.
Let’s try a few out:

The Rolling Stones – I Can’t Get No Satisfaction.
D-Ream – Things Can Only Get Better.
ABBA – The Winner Takes It All.
The Beatles – Help
Ike and Tina Turner – River Deep Mountain High
M People – Search For The Hero

Should there be a type of NCT test for supporters. How would we get on if we tried to go through one?

I tried to analyse all this  as I boarded the DART for Connolly Station to connect with the trusty old motorcar, which had been abandoned somewhere near the Four Courts, via the LUAS.
But my thoughts were interrupted as the train broke down – yes, it stopped shortly after Booterstown, which had undergone a name change - some adjustments to B left it looking like an L, so at least someone had a warped sense of humour.
To make matters worse, a Bray Wanderers supporter wanted to talk about the game, he was full of it – enthusiasm – as he explained that his neighbour’s house at Sydney Parade (posh part of town) had just been sold for E2,000,000.
What that had to do with the game I’m not sure?
But it really was a new experience – chatting to a millionaire.
The train got going again and so too did the millionaire. Connolly station eventually and another wait – 20 minutes for the LUAS. The car never looked so good.

Oh, by the way, don’t forget the race night which the Dublin Supporters Club are organising – it’s on 30th May – the night after we beat Drogheda. Well, we’ve beaten UCD and Cork City at home, so let’s go for a hat-trick and hear Dermot Keely explain (say this with a Dublin accent)

“Ya know, Drogheda were very poor tonight, the defending was terrible, I can understand how Sligo scored five, but they were lucky.”

“We love the Rovers, we do, oh Rovers we love you
