Life-long Bit O'Red fan Conall Collier and regular sligorovers.com contributor gives his views on the defeat at the hands of St Pat's last week.
by Conall Collier

Maybe it’s a little unfair on the referee. Maybe I could just ignore it. But I thought that the referee at Richmond Park on Friday night could have had a better game. Many of his decisions were fine, but it was the ones he didn’t make which I found so infuriating.

He missed a blatant foul on the edge of the St. Pat’s penalty area late in the second-half. Now, maybe he didn’t actually see the offence, he may have been unsighted, it can happen in the frenzy of a game, but surely he is experienced enough to work out that something happened from the reaction of the Sligo Rovers players.

Maybe he isn’t that experienced. He proceeded to flash a yellow card, obviously for something that was said. Yet, a St. Pat’s player escaped censure in the first-half and he obviously said something.
However, the greatest irritation was the three blatant foul throws by the same St. Pat’s player in the closing stages of the second-half.

On each occasion the player lifted his foot off the ground. The assistant-referee (lineswoman in this instance) was in the other half of the pitch and could not be expected to see it, but the referee was well positioned.  Miss one, okay, miss two, not so good, miss three, very unacceptable. Okay, senior players are supposed to know how to take a throw-in, this guy obviously does not.

Marks out of 10 for the referee – five (that’s the basic minimum for turning up).
Marks out of 10 for Sligo Rovers in the first-half – eight.
Marks out of 10 for Sligo Rovers in the second-half – five.
Nostalgia factor – 10 (I couldn’t believe it when I saw Mark Hutchison on the bench, I was looking around for Nicky Reid).

Hopefully, things will get better. We weren’t too bad in the first-half, an unfortunate error by the usually reliable Conor O’Grady.

Disappointing crowd for the league leaders. I know that if Sligo Rovers were on top of the league we would have packed Inchicore on Friday night. Nice touch from St. Pat’s to give out the free programmes after they upped the admission prices.

And we were spied upon by a Bohs scout who sold the perimeter wall outside the Showgrounds.
