Following the 2-0 defeat to Setanta Cup holders Drogheda United last Tuesday Paul Cook spoke to sligorovers.com to give his thoughts on the game
In the second half Rovers created several chances and many would argue they were unlucky not to get something out of the game, Cook bemoaned the lack of luck during the game but felt the concession of goals at vital time left his side with too much to do
“We are creating chances at the minute. We are asking the lads for a lot of effort and endeavour and getting that but we aren’t getting the rub of the green. Football is like that, sometimes it goes for you and sometimes it goes against you. Tonight [Tuesday] it has gone against us and, I might be wrong in what I am saying, but to concede goals in the second and eighty-third minute is certainly killer times to concede against good teams. We have got a very honest group of players at the minute; they certainly do not let you down for trying”
A worrying aspect for Cork is that apart from the Cork City victory his team have had a lot of trouble turning domination of possession into goals. Cook cited a lack of belief as to the reasoning behind this
“We were just saying to the lads that you have to believe you are going to score. At the minute we do not really, watching from the sides you don’t think we believe we are going to score. Sometimes when you get the chance you have to have that little bit more than ‘oh we might score’ or ‘it is nice to be playing Drogheda, we’re doing ok because we are competing’”
In the last 10 games Rovers have won one and drew one in a run that has seen the club slide down the league table. As we approach the break in league action Cook is adamant this run must end soon
“We have to start winning games, performance wise we are doing ok but results are not good at the minute”
Ahead of the game against Bohemians this Saturday Paul Cook has played down suggestion that the game takes added importance because of Sean Connor’s return to the Showgrounds, calling it “just another game”
Cook did stress the importance of getting a result to rise Rovers out of their current slump but for the former Southport manager the fact Sean Connor is the manager of Bohemains is of no extra concern to him
“It is just another game. With all due respect to Sean, he is a professional person and I am certainly a professional person. I have watched Bohs this season and they are certainly one of the better teams I have watched. They don’t give any goals away. Sean has got a good side there and in my opinion is doing a good job. I wish everyone in football well. At the end of the day you have got one job to worry about that is your own. It is as simple as that and that is all I am interested in” Sligo Rovers vs Bohemians Saturday 2nd June 2007 - 7.45 pm Report courtesy of Rory Houston. |
