While it was regarded in some quarters as overly ambitious when it was launched, the group driving Sligo Rovers fundraising syndicate are within touching distance of their target.
A team chaired by local businessman Vincent Nally developed a financial package for the club centered on 20 syndicates of €2,000 each. As an added incentive, Mr Nally committed an extra €10,000 of funding if the initial target of €40,000 was reached. ‘The basic objective of the projects is to raise funds for team manager Paul Cooke in the July transfer window. In the short time he has been in charge, he has made a huge impact, and I feel there is a consensus that he fully should be able strengthen the squad. Our aim is to raise €50,000 to enable Paul to enter the transfer market to make the signings he needs to take the club to the next level.’ Club Chairman Michael Toolan is a member of the team, and he acknowledged the huge boost this initiative represents for the club. ‘I think everyone associated with the club realises the excellent job Paul Cooke is doing. He has the team playing with a passion, skill and commitment that has endeared him to the fans. Having achieved so much in such a short space of time, he deserves the opportunity to strengthen the squad.’ Mr Toolan went to praise the pivotal role played by Vincent Nally in this project. ‘While idea of a syndicate had been proposed in the past, it took someone with Vincent’s business acumen and drive to plan and deliver it, and the club is greatly indebted to him once again for overseeing a major fundraising initiative on our behalf.’ Former club treasurer Fergal Keaveney is one of the organisers of the scheme, and he urged the wider Sligo Rovers community to help them get over the finish line. ‘To date fifteen syndicates have either come on board or committed to do so. So we are asking individuals or groups with the good of the club at heart to come together to form a syndicate and help us reach our target. We are tantalisingly close, but the July window is fast approaching and we need to be in a position to see this through in the next week or so’ Vincent Nally is optimistic they will reach their goal. ‘There is great goodwill toward the club throughout the town and county, and the recent run of form in both league and cup has generated great confidence as to what this team can actually achieve. But the truth is we will never know the true potential of this side unless we invest in it, and we owe it to Paul Cooke to allow him strengthen his squad to continue his excellent stewardship of the club. We have almost reached our goal, and I am sure there is enough momentum behind the syndicate scheme to ensure we ultimately succeed.’ The team coordinating Sligo Rovers ‘ Syndicate’ initiative is chaired by Vincent Nally and includes club Chairman Michael Toolan and local businessmen Fergal Keaveney and Michael Clancy.
