Sligo Rovers unbeaten run was brought to an abrupt halt on Friday night last when Derry responded to the appointment of a new manager by putting four past the Bit O'Red.
eircom Premier League of Ireland Friday 6 July, The Brandywell Derry City 4 Sligo Rovers 1 Derry City displayed their form of old when comprehensively defeating Sligo Rovers at the Brandywell in their first match under the control of new boss John Robertson. The presence of Robertson in the dugout reaped handsome dividends, the Scot having very few complaints with performance. Indeed, Derry could have actually have won by an even greater margin, such was their overall dominance. Determined and focused from the outset, the home side broke the deadlock in the 34th minute following a superb move down the right. Gareth McGlynn made the decisive break and when he found Mark Farren inside the area, the striker gained control of the ball before poking it home from close range. Derry deservedly doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Farren swept the ball to Killian Brennan and his centre found the totally unmarked McGlynn, who drove it home from 10 yards. But Sligo responded immediately and they reduced the deficit within a minute following a defensive error. Eddie McCallion appeared to slip when in possession and when Stephen Manson's cross was not properly dealt with, in stepped Matthew Judge to guide the ball home. After the break the home side continued to dominate and they increased their lead in the 56th minute. Ciaran Martyn, playing his first game since returning from his loan deal with Norwegian club, Fredrikstad, displayed great strength to hold off a defender after Sammy Morrow played him in, the midfielder find the net with a blistering shot. Much to the delight of their new manager, the home side's constant pressure saw them make it 4-1 when another McGlynn delivery found Farren and he forced the ball home from eight yards in the 77th minute for his second of the night.
