It was honours even tonight at the Showgrounds as Sligo Rovers and Galway United played out a one-all draw. From a Rovers perspective, this was the one that got away, as they were pegged back from taking all three points by a late Derek Glynn goal. eircom League of Ireland Premier Division Sligo Rovers 1 – 1 Galway United Match Sponsor: Emo Filling Station, Ballinacarrow President’s Man of the Match: Seamus Coleman Rovers fielded two changes from the team that leaked four against Derry with new signing Daniel Ventre and Gavin Peers coming in for Sean Kelly and Stephen Manson. And the wounded home side looked to get back on track early on, dominating the opening quarter hour. In the fifth minute, Hughes forced a decent save from Rogers after some good build up down the left involving Cretaro and Judge. Minutes later Kudozovic found Hughes in space on the edge of the box and just when it looked he was going to bring Cash who was in space on the right, into the equation, the Australian struck at goal, but Rogers was again equal to it. Faz continued to cause problems and soon after, he pounced on a loose ball in the box but blasted over from close range. It wasn’t all Rovers though, and midway through half the Tribesmen countered down the left, O’Brien whipping a low ball across the box but there was no-one to take advantage. Moments afterwards, Galway were on the offensive again, this time a set-piece from Murphy went wide of Brush’s post. The Bit O’Red continued to look lively and the two South Sligo men, Cretaro and Curran linked well to send the latter clear on the right, but Curran’s ball across the box just fell behind Judge. The visitors went close in the forty second minute when Brush was forced to head clear outside his box. Former Rover, Derek O’Brien was on hand to lob a great ball goalward that saw the retreating Brush struggling to flap it out. Rovers continued where they left off after the break raiding down both flanks and the chances continued, Coleman striking over from the edge of the box early on. Coleman was involved again on fifty eight minutes when the home side made the breakthrough. Surging into the box, the young Donegal man pulled it back to the edge the box. It fell to O’Grady whose shot was blocked, but Hughes picked it up and bundled his way into the box before side footing the ball into the path of Matthew Judge who made no mistake slotting home his fourth goal in five matches. Galway almost got level on sixty eight when a speculative effort from distance by Shane Tracy almost caught Brush unawares. Eight minutes later, they came closer still when Charles glanced on a Nootimeer free kick into the path of Barry Moran, but Moran’s stabbed effort went narrowly wide. The Bit O’Red went close on eighty two when a Kudozovic free kick forced Rogers down low to deny him With only five minutes left on the clock United got their equaliser. A Murphy effort was blocked by Coleman but it fell to Glynn who slotted home past. It was heartbreaking for the Rovers faithful and the game became frenetic in the closing stages, but neither side edged ahead.
