If ever there was a player whose heart belongs to Sligo Rovers, it is Conor O’Grady. He speaks to Club Promotions Officer, Sinead Fraher, about family connections, international recognition and his love of the Bit O’Red.
Conor and his family have long been supporters of the Rover. He was brought up close to the Showgrounds, where his grandfather served in the St. John’s ambulance for the Club - his family still lives only a stones throw from the stadium. Now in his second spell with the Bit O’Red, he also had spells with Cork City (where he was voted Player of the Year by the fans) and Derry City. He has also played for his county in GAA but his first love is soccer. O’Grady received international recognition at School Boy, under 18s and under 21 level. The highlights of this time was captaining the Schoolboys team, and winning a European Bronze medal in the UEFA under 19 championships held in Sweden in 1999.He is only part-time player and his other job is working for Union Foods, who are very cooperative in letting him play for the Sligo Rovers squad. However, the part-time training has never curtailed his performances which this season continue to be instrumental in rovers drive for European football. |
