It proved to be a week of woe for Sligo Rovers as following on from their FAI Cup exit against Waterford United they were beaten 2-0 by Galway United in Terryland Park last Friday night. Rovers made only one change from the game against Waterford as James Meredith made his debut as he replaced the suspended Daniel Ventre.

Galway started the game well with both John Fitzgerald and Alan Murphy having efforts off target inside the opening ten minutes. Rafael Cretaro had Rovers two best chances of the half but both times he had shots saved by Galway keeper Gary Rogers. The home side had the best chance of the half in the 41st minute when John Russell put in a cross from the right picking out the un-marked Murphy whose close range header was kept out by a great full stretch stop from Richard Brush.

Four minutes into the second half and Galway took the lead as they won a free-kick on the left. Daryl Robson took it curling the ball into the heart of the box where Wesley Charles scored with a powerfully struck header. Rovers had a chance to get back on level terms in the 58th minute when Fahrudin Kudozovic sent in a corner from the right which was met by a header from Gavin Peers that was blocked. The ball then dropped to Conor O’Grady but his effort was also blocked as Galway got the ball away.

Rovers created another good opening in the 62nd minute as Adam Hughes played the ball up to Kudozovic who chipped it into Matthew Gordon. He flicked it on for Hughes who was in on goal but just over-ran the ball. Galway then made sure of the win with their second in the 70th minute, Derek Glynn dispossessed Gavin Peers and played the ball across to David Cooke who turned and shot low past Brush and inside the post.
