Sligo Rovers completed a hat-trick of wins over Pete Mahon's UCD side on Saturday night. Adam Hughes and Keith Foy scored in either half as Sligo Rovers recorded their first win in six games at the Showgrounds.report courtesy www.oceanfm.ie Hughes's strike in the opening minutes set the home side on their way, and Foy's second-half penalty secured the win as Rovers returned to fifth spot in the Premier Division. Rovers started without a new centre-back pairing of Jamie MacKenzie and Daniel Ventre as Gavin Peers was suspended. The injury-plagued Students were missing six players through injury, Paul Byrne, Ian Bermingham and Tony McDonnell among them, and showed four changes from the team beaten by Cork City on Monday. Rovers had the best of starts with captain Hughes claiming his second goal in successive games after just six minutes. The Australian pounded the net from a half-volley after some good work by Fahrudin Kuduzovic and Brian Cash. The remainder of the first-half was entertaining but produced few clearcut chances, although Mark Boyd went close with a shot from distance. Hughes almost got a second early after the restart when Boyd's neat flick put him in, but the linesman deemed the midfielder to be offside and he dragged his shot wide in any case. But Rovers did get a second ten minutes in when Hughes bustled his way into the box and a Kuduzovic snapshot was well blocked by keeper Darren Quigley. But substitute Raffaele Cretaro followed in and when Conor Kenna's sliding tackle saw him handle the ball, referee Richie Winter pointed straight for the spot. Full-back Foy confidently dispatched the spot-kick low to Quigley's right. Conan Byrne forced a decent save from keeper Richard Brush through a free-kick, and Ronan Finn also tried his luck from long-range as the Dubliners summoned a response. UCD finally mustered an effective reaction when substitute Paul Murphy steered the ball home from close range in the dying minutes. But a bad leg injury to full-back Derek Doyle, shortly after Shane McFaul's powerful free-kick was blocked by Rovers defender Daniel Ventre, compounded a miserable week for the visitors. Sligo Rovers: Brush, Coleman, MacKenzie, Ventre, Foy (Curran 85), Cash, O'Grady, Boyd, Hughes (Manson 80), Judge (Cretaro 45), Kuduzovic. Subs not used: Arcaba, Tierney. UCD: Quigley, Mahon, Doyle (King 80), Kenna, Shortall, Finn, C Byrne, McFaul, Hynes (Purcell 59), Sammon (Murphy 70), McWalter. Subs not used: McMillan, Gregg |
