 Sligo Rovers fell to their fourth consecutive defeat on Saturday night in the Showgrounds at the hands of Waterford United who gained three valuable points in the fight to avoid the play-off place.
courtesy of www.oceanfm.ie Waterford United picked up a valuable three points in their battle against relegation as they defeated a lacklustre Sligo Rovers side 2-1 in the Showgrounds last night. Rovers showing four changes from the side that lost against St. Patrick's Athletic never got going and have now lost their last four games. A listless first half came to life in the 33rd minute when Waterford took the lead. They won a free on the right and in a well worked routine Dave Warren rolled the ball down the right to Ray Scully who put in a good delivery and Vinny Sullivan was on hand to head home. That goal finally saw some urgency injected into Rovers play and they nearly drew level in the 41st minute when Brian Cash played the ball into Matthew Judge who worked his way into the box only for the ball to bobble just as he was about to shoot and his chip effort proved an easy save for Waterford keeper Dean Delaney. Two minutes later and the sides were level as Waterford defender David Breen was caught in possession by Fahrudin Kudozovic who then drilled the ball low past Delaney. That was the Rovers striker's 5th goal of the season against Waterford. Rovers couldn't build on this goal and manager Paul Cook made a double change in the 58th minute as he looked to get his side going. Jamie McKenzie and Matthew Gordon replaced Seamus Coleman and Keith Foy. Rovers though failed to threaten the Waterford goal in the second half and it was the visitors who scored again in the 62nd minute. Sullivan flicked the ball into the path of Dave Mulcahy who powered his way into the Rovers box and blasted the ball high into the Rovers net. Rovers were then reduced to ten in the 66th minute as Danny Ventre received a straight red card for his challenge on Willie John Kiely. Rovers did try to rally in the last few minutes but were let down by some poor deliveries and Waterford picked up the points.
