As past of “Give it a Swirl Day” which was run in Sligo by the Sligo Volunteer centre, Sligo Rovers were proud to host the volunteers who were involved in the Sligo Rovers Training Ground renovation project.

The training pitch, which is situated at the back of the “Blue Stand” had huge potential for expansion. The expansion project was ambitious but when the Volunteer centre approached  Rovers with ideas for possible projects, this one was the project that really captured the Sligo Volunteer centres imagination.

Rubble that had collected around the Sligo Rovers Grounds was sorted. Any wood was chopped up by the volunteers and is being distributed as fire wood in conjunction with the Saint Vincent De Paul organisation. The remaining rubble was used to fill in the huge craters that were in the to be expanded ground. The surface was flattened and this ground will be reseeded for next season.

All in all after the co-operation of the Sligo Volunteer Centre, Sligo Rovers and all of the Volunteers who were supplied by their places of work, the Sligo Rovers training pitch was expanded by an amazing thirty feet and people who have fires at home and receive Saint Vincent De Paul assistance will receive bags of fire wood which will be very much appreciated as we come into the cold winter months.

Sligo Rovers would like to extend a word of thanks to MBNA, Bank of Ireland, Globe House, Sligo Borough Council Parks Department and E.S.B Sligo for allowing their employees be involved in the project. Another word of thanks would be to the Sligo Volunteer Centre for their co-ordination of the event.
