Sligo Rovers effectively ended Shamrock Rovers hopes of qualifying for Europe as they drew 0-0 in Tolka Park last Friday evening. Rovers made four changes to the side that lost against Waterford and consequently produced a much improved performance.

They nearly got off to a nightmare start as the home side should have taken the lead in the 1st minute when Richard Brush dropped a cross from Ger O’Brien. The ball landed right at the feet of Ger Rowe who shot into the side netting. Rovers created their first chance in the 7th minute when Brian Cash took a throw on the right picking out Rafael Cretaro. He crossed into the box where Matthew Gordon headed over from the back of the six yard box. Cretaro created another opportunity in the 24th minute as he played the ball into Gary Curran who couldn’t bring it under control and shot well off target. They had an even better chance in the 33rd minute as they won a free kick on the right which was taken by Fahrudin Kudozovic. He curled the ball in around the back of the Shams defence finding Adam Hughes who headed down and up over the bar from in front of goal.

They created another good opening in the 56th minute as Kudozovic played the ball out right to Cretaro who whipped it in low across the face of goal. Shams keeper Barry Murphy was alert to the danger as he got down well to push the ball away from goal. The home side then had the best chance of the game in the 65th minute when Robbie Clarke played in a high ball from the left which Brush came for but missed and it dropped to David Cassidy. His low drive was cleared off the line by Gavin Peers. Rovers had a chance late on to claim the three points when Matthew Gordon took down a long kick from Brush but his resulting effort lacked power and was easily gathered by Murphy.
