Sligo Rovers first game of the new season ended in defeat away to St Patrick's Athletic tonight in Inchicore. Despite going ahead midway through the first half courtesy of Jamie McKenzie, a second half blitz from the home side from the hour mark left Rovers with no way back.
report courtesy www.oceanfm.ie The new Eircom League of Ireland Premier Division got underway last Friday evening amid farcical scenes in Richmond Park as a row over kits saw kick-off between St. Patrick’s Athletic and Sligo Rovers delayed by over 30 minutes. When the game did eventually get underway Rovers had to take to the field wearing St. Pat’s away jersies. When the game did eventually get underway it was an entertaining affair played in front of a large crowd. Rovers stunned the home crowd as they took the lead in the 25th minute. Chris Butler took a quick free kick playing the ball up to Conor O’Grady who threaded it through to Jamie McKenzie and he went on to take the ball round Pat’s keeper Barry Ryan and shoot home. After that Rovers looked comfortable with keeper Pat Jennings producing a couple of good stops to keep Pat’s at bay. Rovers had a chance to double their lead in the 52nd minute when Mauro Almeida’s free kick from inside his own half was flicked on by Anto Murphy to Romauld Boco who volleyed high and wide. Pat’s drew level in the 59th minute. Keith Fahey crossed from the right and a moment of indecision from Jennings saw Jamie Harris steal in to head home. That goal signalled a period of implosion for Rovers with Pat’s taking the lead in the 64th minute. Gary O’Neill’s neat chip into the box wrong-footed Jennings with Ryan Guy taking advantage as he headed the ball into the net. Three minutes later and the game was over as Pat’s scored their third. A defensive mix-up between Alemida and Anto Murphy saw the ball drop kindly for Guy and he blasted it high into the net. Rovers had a chance to pull a goal back late on when Fahrudin Kudozovic had a free kick parried away by Ryan.
