Sligo Rovers mauled Kildrum Tigers in Dry Arch park last Monday 6-1 in the first round of the League Cup. Matthew Judge scored a hat trick while three other players scored their first competitive goals for the club
Rovers were on the offence from the kick off and already had a chance to take the lead before Matthew Judge brilliantly lobbed the goalkeeper from outside of the area. Fahrudin Kudozovic should have made it two but in the eight minute Brian Cash did double Rovers’ lead, shooting into an empty net after Kudozovic’s initial shot.
Rovers were outclassing Kildrum in every department and had numerous opportunities to increase their lead which they wasted. The Tigers got back in the game near the end of the first half. Gavin Peers was judged to have handled the ball in the area and Coyle confidently beat Richard Brush. It was frustrating as Rovers should have been out of sight rather than going into half time with Kildrum threatening an equalizer.
This proved to be the only time of the game where the outcome was threatening to anything else but a Rovers win. Judge got his second when substitute Anto Murphy’s cross was deflected and he headed home. He completed his hat trick minutes later with almost a carbon copy of his second goal- Kudozovic provided the cross this time in what was his last action of the game as he was substituted for Rommy Boco.
The goal of the game came from Anto Murphy. His shot from over 50 yards out sailed over the Kildrum keeper and into the net. It was his first goal for the Bit O’Red and he may never score a better one. Rovers did not settle for five as Rommy Boco elegantly went by his marker and struck a left foot shot into the bottom corner. 6-1 was how it finished and apart from one hiccup it was a stroll in Dry Arch Park for Paul Cook’s side. The only worrying aspect was injuries to Gavin Peers and Chris Butler with the latter being rumoured to have suffered a serious ankle injury.
