Active ImageA Fahrudin Kudozovic penalty in the second minute of injury time secured a point for the Bit O'Red against Drogheda at United Park tonight. It was no more than they deserved as despite being under intense pressure, particulary in the first half, they battled until the end to secure a share of the spoils.

Looking to bounce back from the defeat by St Pat’s at the weekend, Paul Cook named three changes to the starting line-up with Patrick Jennings coming in for Richard Brush, Chris Butler returning from suspension for Danny Ventre and Mauro Almeida replacing Jamie McKenzie.

The home side had the edge in terms of first half possession, but it was a tentative affair with the intriguing midfield battle of former team-mates O’Grady and Hughes characterising the first half exchanges. Despite their possession, Drogheda found it hard to break down Rovers and it wasn’t until the half was drawing to a close that Kendrick and Robinson had half chances that might have troubled Jennings.

However, the breakthrough did come a minute into injury time when Stuart Byrne broke from midfield picking the ball up on the left before firing past Jennings from an acute angle.

Rovers stepped it up a gear in the second half, battling for every ball and were unlucky that they didn’t get back on level terms with efforts from Gavin Peers and Seamus Coleman. The home side remained dangerous on the counter attack but tireless work from the back five ensured they didn’t extend their lead.

Ultimately the collective toil paid off as the Bit O’Red pushed forward for the equaliser in the closing moments. And it came in the second minute of injury time when Jason Gavin was adjudged to have handled in the box and Dave McKeon pointed to the spot after what seemed an eternity.

Up stepped Fahrudin Kudozovic and although Ewings denied him, the Bosnian was quickest to the rebound and made no mistake from close range to secure the point.

The Bit O’Red now face another tough assignment on Friday night as they travel to face league leaders Bohemians at the earlier time of 7.15pm in Dalymount Park.
