Active ImageA call for more people to lend a hand in raising much-needed finance for Sligo Rovers has been made in advance of a special meeting of the club’s Management Committee, members and shareholders next Monday night.

The gathering in the Southern Hotel at 8pm is not a public meeting, but club chairman, Michael Toolan, sees it as an opportunity to try to get more help in the running of the club.

He said the reason for the meeting was to bring members up to speed with what was happening in the club.

“At the last AGM it was decided that we should have a couple of meetings like this. The Management Committee are only representatives of the members and we feel it is important to keep everybody up to speed.”

Asked about the club’s financial position, he said: “A lot of eircom League clubs are finding it hard to keep going. With the downturn in the economy and other factors it is difficult.”

He said it is going to need a lot of hard work to keep things going and they were looking for a bit more help. “For instance, there is nobody doing the club lotto around the town at the moment and maybe somebody could resurrect that.”

“Working off the back of the Derry City game, people can see that the team are giving 100 per cent and if they want that to continue they have to lend a hand.”

A similar point was made by Sligo Rovers manager Paul Cook, when he praised his charges in the aftermath of Saturday’s scoreless, yet thrilling encounter against Derry City at The Showgrounds.

“All the lads played well and I am really pleased for them. What we are trying to do is to fight our hardest to have a football club. The most important thing is Sligo Rovers, it is not about me, players or the chairman, it is about the club.

“What we want to do is make sure we have a team. We want the people of Sligo to come together, talk about it and try to put in place a competitive team for the Premier Division.”
