Active ImageSligo Rovers A League team notched up their first three points this season as a last minute Ross McLoughlin goal was enough to overcome Shamrock Rovers at The Showgrounds yesterday afternoon.

It was the battle of the Rovers in the Showgrounds on Sunday afternoon when bottom placed Sligo Rovers met third place Shamrock Rovers. Yet to secure a point this season, Sligo Rovers were looking to get a win under their belts.

With the first half evenly matched, Sligo Rovers began the second half more dominate than their Dublin rivals. This showed by the increased amount of possession Rovers were getting. In the 53rd minute, Rovers boss Brian Dorian was sent to the stands by referee Paul Deering following a heated argument between the pair.

Ciaran Greene had a chance to put Rovers in front in the 60th minute when he got away from his marker but his shot was well saved by the ‘Shams’ keeper who hit the ball out for a corner. The game dragged on and with neither side having many clear cut chances on goal, it looked destined to be a draw. Then in the last few minutes of the game, substitute Ross McLoughlin was given a great chance following a cross from Danny Keohane, McLoughlin lobbed the oncoming Shamrock keeper and put the ball into the net to put Rovers 1-0 up.

That’s how it finished and McLoughlin’s goal ensured Rovers got their first three points of the ‘A’ league season. Next up for Rovers is a tough trip away to Drogheda United on August 10th, Drogheda were in 2nd place before this weekend’s fixtures.
