It proved to an entertaining affair in the challenge game between Sligo
Rovers and Merville United on Wednesday night in the Showgrounds. This battle
of the near neighbours was always going to be a one sided affair but
Merville can take heart from their performance as they prepare for life
back in the Junior Soccer league. Rovers started fast and were five up after twenty minutes. Sean Doherty, Chris Butler, David McDaid and Danny Ventre all got on the score-sheet with Keith Coleman scoring an own goal. Doherty’s was the pick of the bunch as he struck home a sublime left foot shot from thirty yards. Merville got their first in the 25th minute. Mauro Almeida passed the ball back to Richard Brush with Merville’s Gareth Kelly blocking him down before going on to tap the ball into the empty net. Merville enjoyed a good spell after this with Kelly forcing a smart save from Brush while Johnny Martyn went close with a long range strike. It was Rovers though who were next to score with Ventre getting his second in the 35th minute. A minute after that John Bellew set up Sean Doherty while Bellew turned provider again in the 39th minute this time playing in Richie Ryan. Rovers then won a penalty which Doherty stepped up to take but his kick was saved by Merville keeper Emmet Foley. Merville had the last word in the half as Stephen Hallahan whipped in a corner from the right which was turned into his own net by Ventre under pressure from Caolan O’Grady. The second half saw Rovers change teams as the A team took the pitch. They soon continued were the first team left off with Paul McTiernan scoring twice either side of a goal from Steve Feeney. Bellew got his first of the night with Mikey Creane scoring the last of Rovers goals in the 71st minute. Rovers manager Paul Cook came on himself in the second half and would have got on the scoresheet but for a top class save from Foley. It was Merville who wrapped up the scoring in the third when they awarded a penalty in the 90th minute which was confidently tucked away by Aaron Murren. This was the first of what will hopefully be an annual fixture and after the game there was plenty of post match discussions in Mooney’s Bar who sponsored the match.
