Sligo Rovers strike-force rose to the gauntlet laid down by their manager during the week as McTiernan, Judge and Flannery all got on the score-sheet against Waterford United last night. The three-one scoreline, was comprehensive in the end, and with a free-flowing and open game that at times looked like it could go either way, there was plenty of value for money for the Bit O’Red faithful. ![]() Rovers fielded one change from last week, Matt Judge being preferred to Sean Flannery, but it was Judge’s partner, Paul McTiernan that set The Showgrounds alight after only five minutes. Keith Foy playing a one-two with Judge on the left before squaring to McTiernan who made no mistake. The visitors didn’t rest on their laurels for long and although operating with five across the middle, chances weren’t scarce and it took only seven minutes to draw level when Hughes took advantage of confusion in the Rovers defence following a corner. Five minutes later, United could have made it two but Doyle’s effort went narrowly wide. The Bit O’Red got back on track and as the half progressed two efforts from McTiernan gave an indicator of what was to come in the second forty five. The second half was more cautious as neither side wanted to make the first move. Waterford however, had another chance to go ahead around the hour mark when a McCambridge header from a Hawkins cross was brilliantly tipped over by O’Hara. With Gary Curran going off injured, Jason McCartney was introduced, going out to the left flank, but it was from the other side where the damage was done in the sixty-fifth minute, following a speculative ball forward by Peers. There didn’t seem to be much danger but confusion between Fyffe and his central defenders allowed man of the match, Matt Judge to pounce and slot home his first goal for the Bit O’Red. Rovers put the game beyond doubt with ten minutes remaining when McCartney who was running freely down the left crossed into the box. Flannery failed to get to it the first time, but Hughes was on hand to unselfishly pass to the Drumcliffe-man who made it three. With the Cork City game next week postponed, due to Cork’s Setanta Cup commitments, the Bit O’Red won’t be in action again until they face Shelbourne in The Showgrounds on 29th April.
