A goal each from Danny Ventre and Anthony Elding was enough to see Sligo Rovers safelty through to the third round of this year's FAI Ford Cup, as the Bit o'Red saw off the challenge of Waterford United at the RSC on Saturday night last.
Managerless Waterford United went into the tie unbeaten since the departure of Paul O’Brien, while Sligo were looking to put indifferent league form behind them.
It was Sligo who started the stronger with David Cawley and Kieran Djilali launching attacks.
However, Iarfhlaith Davoren was lucky not to concede a penalty for a late challenge on Waterford’s Paul Quilty after nine minutes, while Sligo ‘keeper Gary Rogers made a nice save from a Dylan Mernagh glancing header shortly after. Raf Cretaro then went off injured for Sligo.
The defending league champions then took the lead through Danny Ventre following an Aaron Green corner after 21 minutes. And Sligo crucially doubled their lead in first-half injury time when Aaron Green crossed for Anthony Elding.
The Bit O'Red kept possession well in the second period and Waterford struggled to get into the game. Both sides created a few chances but Rovers never looked in danger of conceding as they progressed 2-0.
