Sligo Rovers suffered a 5-1 defeat in Tallaght Stadium on Friday night in the SSE Airtricity League.
Despite Dinny Corcoran getting on the scoresheet again the Rovers defence couldn’t keep the Hoops at bay.
The Bit o’Red started the game well with Sander Puri getting a shot on target after just eight minutes following some good work in the box from John Russell, who was making his return to the team. However the Estonian winger shot straight at the home side’s keeper.
The quiet start to the game came to an end of 23 minutes as Brendan Miele put Shamrock Rovers ahead. Full-back Simon Madden crossed well from the right and Miele slotted in.
With five minutes to half-time they doubled their lead. A long ball from the back proved awkward to deal with and Kieran Waters got there first to lob the ball over Richard Brush and into the net.
An early chance in the second half almost got Rovers back in it as Eoin Wearen played the ball to John Russell for a shot. But the effort came off Conor Kenna and got cleared.
The Bit o’Red were applying serious pressure and it told on 61 minutes. Richard Brush sent the ball in behind the Hoops defence and Dinny Corcoran muscled his way to the ball first before looping it over the keeper Craig Hyland.
It looked as if Rovers were going to come back and get something from the game but on 68 minutes Shamrock scored against the run of play to go back in front by two goals. Mikey Drennan finished well in the box on the end of some good build-up play.
A penalty two minutes later seen the striker Drennan get his second of the night.
Dinny Corcoran went close to getting his second just after when he went on a dribble through the defence but he couldn’t find a way past the keeper.
Steven Beattie also kept him on his toes when his powerful shot across the box produced another impressive save at the near post.
As the game entered stoppage time sub Gary Armstrong picked up the ball centrally and made a short run forward before having it shot. It was well hit but the attempt just missed the target.
A final goal for Shamrock Rovers came the third minute of added time with Meile getting his second also shooting in off the far post.
