Rovers’ under-17’s failed to clinch the victory in 2016 season opener against Bohemians.

In the first home game of the new 2016 season Rovers fail to make chances pay and suffer a 4-2 defeat despite a strong showing.

Bohemians took the lead early on when a well worked set-piece routine ended up finding its way in to the back of the net just five minutes in to the game.

Despite this early goal, Rovers continued pressing forward and putting pressure on the Bohemians defence, with their best chance coming in the 12th minute following a spell of great build up play from Kerrigan and Byrne but the shot from Kerrigan was put just over the bar.

In the 13th minute Rovers found the back of the net when Captain Ruadhan Feeney’s free-kick was headed in by James McGrath but it was ruled offside.

In the 28th minute Rovers levelled the game at one a piece, following another free-kick from Feeney which this time found the head of John Mahon who coolly nodded home.

Rovers continued to push for the lead with both Kerrigan and Byrne going close, then in the 42nd minute Bohemians regained the lead through another well worked corner, unfortunately for Rovers things were made even worse, when on the stroke of half time Bohemians scored their third header of the game to make it 3-1 at the half.

In the 88th minute following a very uneventful 2nd half, Rovers came back into the game when substitute Gary Higgins got onto the end of a beautiful cross from Patrick Benson and headed the ball home to make it 3-2.

In the last moments of the game Rovers pushed all men up in chase of the equalising goal, but where instead caught on the counter and despite goalkeeper Lorcan Callaghan’s best efforts the visitors scored again with the last kick of the game to give Bohemians the 4-2 win.

Rovers: Callaghan, Morahan, McDermott, Mahon, McGrath, Feeney(c) (Benson 72), Keaney, Hever (McAllister 67), Kerrigan (Munnelly 55), McGarry (Collins 53), Byrne (Higgins 65).
