Sligo Rovers bowed out of this year’s EA Sports Cup at the Brandywell to Derry City.
A 2-0 win was secured for the 10-time competition winners thanks to a double by Nathan Boyle.
There was just one change made to the starting line-up as Phil Roberts started following his impressive outing from the bench against Dundalk a few days previous.
He took the place of John Russell who reverted to the bench and started on the right wing.
The game started slow with no goalmouth action of note for the opening third.
The wait for chances ended on the half hour. Regan Donelon did well to get the ball into the box for Raff Cretaro. Initially he had a shot blocked the ball was quickly back with Rovers’ Liam Martin.
Martin found Cretaro once again in space for a header, he found the target but didn’t get it around keeper Ger Doherty.
Midfielder Conor McCormack was first to fins the target for the home side on 33 minutes. His shot had power but didn’t have the direction to cause major worries for Micheal Schlingermann.
One minute after City took the lead. A ball put over the top by Niclas Vemmelund got Nathan Boyle around the back and he shot low across goal and into the net.
It was Boyle again just before half-time that found the net for Derry. He was rapid in getting to a header on by Ronan Curtis and calmly slotted the ball home.
Two minutes had been played in the second period when Liam Martin look to punish a defensive mix up when he took a shot after winning the ball put an outstretched leg of Doherty was able to keep the effort out.
John Russell was introduced before the hour in place of Kieran Sadlier. He was next to shoot with a power striker from the edge of the area however the effort was seen wide.
That was it in terms of goal chances as Derry seen it out over the closing stages.
