Rovers U19s strong showing guarantees 3-1 victory against Athlone Town in the Showgrounds.
Rovers remained largely unchanged from their last game, which was a 2-1 loss away to Longford Town, with the only two changes being Doherty coming in for Taheny and Walsh coming on for Borotto.
Despite Rovers’ strong start Athlone took the lead, when they broke free of the Rovers defence and slotted past the goalkeeper giving them the lead with just ten minutes on the clock.
Rovers continued to dominate the game after the goal, but just couldn’t break through the Athlone defence until the 37th minute. Following a great short corner routine and cross from Martin Walsh, centre back Shay Doherty jumped highest and headed the ball past the keeper tying up the game at the half.
Rovers’ spell of dominance continued into the second half. Callum Frempongs cross found Martin Walsh just inside the box who smashed home off the underside of the bar giving Rovers a one goal lead with a magnificent volley.
Just a few minutes after Rovers nearly added to their lead when Walsh’s header forced the Athlone keeper into making a great save following some mesmerizing built up play from Place, Doyle and Morley.
In the 60th minute Rovers were denied again when a well struck shot just outside the box from Mark Birrane smashed off the post denying Rovers a third goal. Just five minutes later Rovers were denied once more by the goal frame when a free kick from Mikey Place cannoned back off the bar.
In the 85th minute Athlone were caught napping when Rovers broke with pace down the right hand side and the ball eventually fell to Place on the edge off the box who calmly placed the ball into the bottom right corner, securing a well-earned 3-1 home win for Rovers.
