Finn harps got the home win over Rovers to end the first stage of the season.
One goal in the first half and another two came in the second giving Harps the victory at a sunny Finn Park.
The Bit o’Red made two changes for the team from beating Galway United by bringing in Michael Leahy and Craig Roddan as they returned from suspension, they replaced Gavin Peers and Jordan Richards.
The game saw a tight opening taking 14 minutes before the first shot was made. John Russell worked the ball out of a tight area for Kieran Sadlier to make a quick left-footed effort but it was wide of the target.
With 17 minutes gone Finn Harps took the lead. A ball over the top into space had Sean Houston making a run away, he steadied himself before sweeping the ball in low under Micheal Schlingermann.
Three minutes later Jimmy Keohane struck the ball over with a powerful shot from outside the box. It would be late in the half before any more chances were seen as Harps looked to consolidate on their lead.
Two more chances came for Keohane late in the half. When Liam Martin did well on the win his cross made the first for a header eight yards out that flew just over.
With one minute left in the half the Kilkenny midfielder shot from distance but one of the many defenders in the box got something in the way.
Rovers started strong early in the second half and Russell made himself an opportunity to test Richard Brush by wriggling free but the ex-Rovers keeper saved well.
Then the second goal came following a cross from the left hand-side, it dropped nicely to Harps top scorer Ryan Curran and he sent the ball powerfully into the net.
The Bit o’Red upped their game further after that and shortly after Russell and Gary Boylan had attempts blocked and Martin sent a shot too high on the hour.
On 69 a corner from Kieran sadlier went through to a waiting Raff Cretaro on the opposite side but a diving Houston sent his ball away from the goals. And a minute later Cretaro beat two in the box before hitting a shot the curled away from the goals.
With 18 minutes left the next goal scored went to Harps. A ball into the box dropped to the feet of Houston and the put this second of the night away.
Jimmy Keohane was the closest to getting a consolation with a couple of efforts but it wasn’t to be Rovers night and the three-game winning streak end.
The Bit o’Red go into the break in 7th position in this season’s SSE Airtricty League. We will be back at The Showgrounds in three weeks for our return against Bray Wanderers on Saturday June 25.
