U19s make dream start against Athlone

Sligo Rovers Under-19s made a dream start to life in the Elite Division with a 3-0 win over Athlone Town in The Showgrounds this afternoon.

Ryan McManus, Ross Taheny and Jordan Loftus were on target for Rovers as they head the table after the first day of the new season.

The Bit o' Red made an ideal opening to the game with McManus giving them the lead after just six minutes.

The midfielder's superbly struck free kick from the edge of the area sailed into the net past the Athlone goalkeeper Paddy Dunican.

The Northern Section champions were 2-0 up after 59 minutes as Taheny finished low past Dunican to deservedly double the advantage.

Cian Brennan teed up Loftus for the sealing goal with 10 minutes remaining as he slotted the ball under Dunican from inside the area to make it a superb display on the opening day by Ciaran Kelly and Gavin Dykes' side.

Sligo Rovers U19s team: Murphy, Glennon (Kennoy 74), Casey, Boylan, Dykes, McManus, Armstrong, Nevin, Keating (Loftus 57), Brennan, Donnellan.
