North signs new contract

Sligo Rovers can confirm Danny North has signed a new contract for the 2014 season.

The striker, scorer of 24 goals in 46 appearances for Rovers, including two goals in the FAI Ford Cup final win over Drogheda United this year, extends his career with the Bit o’ Red to a third season.

Later this week the club will open a store for Christmas in Sligo Town in Wine Street in the Adelaide district.

The Bit o’ Red Supporters Trust Sligo Rovers Calendar for 2014 will be on sale this weekend, a must-have item for the new season with the Rovers.

Priced at just €10, all proceeds go to the Supporters Trust and to Sligo Rovers.

Rovers t-shirts, jackets, jerseys, player-worn jerseys, scarves, hats and much more will be on sale in the club store.

North said upon re-signing today: “I’m very happy to have my future secured. I like it here and we’re hoping for a good start to next season. It is looking positive, the gaffer has put together a good group of players already. That has to be the case because as he says we want to challenge on all fronts and make that breakthrough in Europe next year if we can as well.

“For a team like Sligo Rovers, it has to be the intention to try to win the league. The FAI Cup final was a great way to finish off the year.  All of the players felt that it wouldn’t have been a successful season if we didn’t win the Cup. The manner in which we did it was unbelievable. I think it will help us going into next year. It is a fresh start as well with some new faces in the squad.

The middle of the season cost us last year and we had some injuries. We know it will be tough to win things because other clubs will strengthen as well but we’re going out to try and do so.

“I’ve scored goals since I’ve come here. There are good players around me who create chances and it’s up to me or whoever is up front to put them away. With a good pre-season under my belt I hope I can hit the ground running from the start like I did in 2012. I missed the guts of a year because of injury so I'm really looking forward to next season. I’m buzzing to stay, I’ve enjoyed my time here and I can’t wait for that first game next season already.”
