David McMillan signs for Rovers

Sligo Rovers have signed striker David McMillan from UCD.

The 24-year-old has joined Rovers on a contract until the end of the season on a free transfer.

McMillan has scored 12 league goals so far this year from 19 appearances and is second top scorer in the league.

He scored eight goals in his final seven games for the Students.

The Dubliner has been especially lethal with penalties scoring six times from the spot, more than any other player in the league.

Rovers manager Ian Baraclough said: "David adds to our options in attack and I feel it was an area we needed to strengthen.

"David is a good age where he is ready to further his ambitions and take the next step. He has a lot of experience even at 24, he has scored regularly and you can see the potential for him to take that to another level.

"One of the reasons we moved for him was he was in a UCD team that plays a similar way and system to us. David has played the striker role very well for them.

"He is quick, he is good in the air and I think the supporters will take to him. They saw what he can do in The Showgrounds a few weeks ago when he played and scored.  He has scored goals from everywhere and his speed and his overall game will suit us.

"I haven’t made a decision on the team for the Cork City game yet but I would like to think David will be ready for it and be an option for us.  He will be eligible for our Champions League campaign and the competition is extremely important. Danny North is just coming back from injury and it was great that he got on the scoresheet on Monday night.

"But he will still need time to find his way back and we will not rush his return to full fitness. Raffaele Cretaro and Aaron Greene are still nursing injuries.

"In Anthony Elding we have one of the top scorers in the league but he is just coming back from suspension. So this is a move that will be of big benefit to us.

"Evan will help him settle in and with his goal on Monday night, he may fancy a partnership up front! It will help David in the early stages to know players at the club but he will be welcomed because everyone understands the need to bolster the squad.

"The players will relish the competition because they want to be driven and they want for us to improve just as much as I do. It is something you should thrive on. You should be constantly looking at trying to improve and for the club to become stronger and stronger.  David's signature is a big boost to us and we are very pleased to finalise the deal today."
