The Bit o’Red’s only previous entrance into this competition seen both games end in defeat at the hands of Yugoslavian champions Red Star Belgrade in 1977.

Rovers have drawn three of the last five games played in Europe but haven’t won any of the last 12 since beating Floriana in 1994.

This will be the second occasion that Sligo Rovers have faced Norwegian opposition. In the 1996 Intertoto Cup Rovers played Lillestrom losing 4-0 in Norway.

League of Ireland and Norwegian clubs have met 11 times previously with two wins and two draws for the Irish sides and seven wins to the Norwegians. Here’s all results excluding Rovers.

Rovers players in Europe:

The current Rovers squad has a total of 83 European appearances with eight goals scored.

Joseph Ndo and Gary Rogers are Rovers most experienced campaigners in european football with 14 appearances each. Ndo and Evan McMillan are the only players to have scored more than once in European competition. Ndo scored against Odense for Shelbourne in the 2005 Intertoto Cup and for Bohs in the Champions League in 2009 against Salzburg making him the only player in the squad to have scored in this competition. McMillan’s came in 2011 for St. Pats against Ukranians Karpaty and Shaktar Karagandy.

Playing against Molde would take Alan Keane to 250 appearances for his career. He has 183 of those with Rovers.

The Bit o’Red haven’t won any of the last two games (against Cork and St. Pats). The last time Rovers went three games without a win included both legs of last year’s Europe League tie with Spartak Trnava.

Opposition: Molde

Molde have won the Norwegain league twice in the last two seasons of 2011 and 2012. That came after finishing as runner-up seven times before that.

This will be their 13th time in European competition and their third time in the Chmpions League. Despite only winning the league twice they also qualified as runners-up in 1999/2000 when the Norwegian league had two places.

That year they faced Real Madrid while they have also played other European giants such as Porto, Stuttgart, Benfica and PSG.

They have played a total of 52 games in European competition. They have 14 wins, 13 draws and 25 defeats. However Molde only recorded four wins away from home having not won any of their first 13 games. They did win twice last year in Europe against Heerenveen and Stuttgart.

In domestic football the Norwegians are unbeaten in their last nine games since a 5-1 home loss to Haugesund. From those nine games they have six wins though one was on penalties. Their season started with four consecutive defeats. Their away form has seen just one win in six not including the win on penalties.

Molde lie 11th in their 16 team league. Their top scorer is Nigerian Daniel Chima who has six goals this year.
