Chairman leads tributes to Andy Tiernan
Messages of condolence can be left at the entrance to the ground today after the passing of Andy Tiernan, groundsman for the club.
Flags will fly at half-mast in The Showgrounds today.
Sligo Rovers chairman Tony Quinn paid tribute this morning following his passing on Monday.
The Rovers chairman spoke warmly about Andy’s trojan work for decades in The Showgrounds.
He said: “Andy’s involvement with the club goes back to the 1960s when his father Jamesie was physiotherapist. He began helping out with various jobs around the ground and it led a lifetime of service dedicated to our club.
“He took great pride in his work and as each year passed, the ambition was not just maintain the pitch but to improve it and we see the results in how The Showgrounds is presented today.
“When Sligo Rovers was at a low ebb, Andy never shied away or baulked on his duty. The club would struggle at times but he was ever-present on a daily basis and he epitomised the volunteer ethos at the club. His focus stayed on doing whatever he could for the betterment of the club.”
The chairman also confirmed there will be a tribute to Andy on Sunday prior to the FAI Ford Cup semi-final with Shamrock Rovers.
“We will be making arrangements to remember Andy on Sunday before kick-off. It will be our tribute to him but we also note that the game itself is in a way recognition for his service for Sligo Rovers.
“It will be very fitting that thousands of Sligo Rovers fans will be present for the biggest cup game in the ground in many years on a pristine surface. That wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and service provided by Andy and he will be in our thoughts for the day.”
